A Kirk Disrupted

Title: A Kirk Disrupted
Author: A. Donald Macleod

Charles Cowan, Scottish industrialist and philanthropist, was a longstanding member of the Sustention Fund Committee of the Free Church of Scotland. Cowan and others were responsible for raising the money necessary to support the work of the chuch following its formation in 1843. Cowan, who was deeply committed to the principles of the Free Church, took practical steps along with others to ensure that the rhetoric of the pulpit was supported by the generosity of the pew. This book is a splendid example of the best kind of history, because from its pages emerges a flesh and blood figure who touched the lives of many of his contemporaries.

For more information on Charles Cowan, you can read an interview with Dr. Macleod on the WTS website.

Guarding the Treasure: How God's People Preserve God's Word

Title: Guarding the Treasure: How God's People Preserve God's Word
Author: Linda Finlayson

Guarding the Treasure is about the journey of God’s Word from his writers of the Old and New Testaments through the great events of history to the present day. There are stories of people who made huge sacrifices to learn from and preserve the Bible. The history of the world is full of battles and swords but in the end it is the spiritual victories won by the pens and printing presses that have left an eternal impact.

Luther on the Christian Life: Cross and Freedom

Title: Luther on the Christian Life: Cross and Freedom

Martin Luther's historical significance can hardly be overstated. Known as the father of the Protestant Reformation, no single figure has had a greater impact on Western Christianity except perhaps Augustine. In Luther on the Christian Life, Carl Trueman introduces readers to the lively Reformer, taking them on a tour of his historical context, theological system, and approach to the Christian life.  Ultimately, this book will help modern readers go deeper in their spiritual walk by learning from one of the great teachers of the faith.

Thomas Chalmers

Title: Thomas Chalmers
Author: Sandy Finlayson

This biography of Thomas Chalmer's brings to life and color one of the most influential stories of Scotland's past. Chalmers was distinctive among both the people and the church of Scotland in his day.
